Hello!
I had other plans for what I was going to write to you today, but this week I spent most of my child-free time reorganising and decluttering. It was very satisfying. If only there wasn’t soooo much more to do…
Today I went to wash dishes to help a friend on a photo shoot. ☺️ It was my first time watching a cookbook come together and my nosy self loved seeing behind the scenes. My greedy self loved getting to taste things, too!
Instead of what I’d planned to write, here’s a quick heads up that there’s a new coffee shop in Hackney whose aim is to help bakers on their road to opening their own physical bakery.
Which means it’s a place you can go to try up-and-coming bakers who don’t have a permanent physical location yet
Running Late Coffee will be rotating baked goods from different bakers.
It’s owned and run by Tom - who used to work at Ozone Coffee Roasters - and Sean, who has worked in several bakeries/coffee shops in London and Ireland. It took Sean and I a minute to realise we’d met at the Croissant Podcast Recording back in March. Speaking of that, I’m planning to run it again in October. What do you think?
I love Tom and Sean’s mission. It aligns with why I can’t stop writing here, and why I keep most of what I write free for everyone to read: I want to help passionate people in the food industry to make a living from their work.
tldr:
If you are a baker - or know one - and can get your goods to Hackney Central for 7am then either let me know or reach out directly to Running Late.
And if you’re near Hackney Central and want to try - or are curious enough to order directly from the bakers - this is who they were stocking today and might be stocking when you visit:
Brownies by Bwownie
Cake, granola and boreka from Liv’s Baked Goodies - you can find her market days on her Instagram and find her baked goods at Yardarm in Leyton, too.
The links above go to their websites if you want to order from them directly.
Running Late Coffee (they have a Thursday morning running club too!)

After I stumbled upon Running Late, I went to E5 Bakehouse to buy bread (and a croissant because theirs still taste great in the afternoon) and saw this sign in the window:

Delicious Things in Yorkshire
I’m going to be sharing the crowdsourced recommendations for North Yorkshire in a future post, along with what I loved last week. If you have any more, please let me know!
If you don’t follow me on Instagram you might not know that Pump Street Chocolate launched new packaging and new moulds and three new bars into their mini collection, including my favourite Brown Bread. Mini size is definitely not enough of that one for me, but if that’s all a shop will stock, I’ll take it.
[Pump Street sent me the set of six to try for free. I love their ethics and consider Joanna a friend so I’m biased in sharing with you here, I guess, but I do spend my own money with them, too. And I’d like to think I’m not that easily bought!]
I hope you’re enjoying some sunshine, wherever you are.
Sending love to all of you, especially everyone who might feel particularly unsafe at the moment. I’m sorry there’s so much hate and anger out there.
Take care,
Jen xx
Love the concept of a revolving roster of upcoming bakers - I feel like so many cafés who supply wholesale baked goods all have the same cardboard-like croissants and maybe a dry brownie.
This is just lovely, Jen. I will try to check them out next time I’m in London Fields. I also love that you went to help wash dishes. I’m sure that was greatly appreciated, and a great way to have a nosey behind the scenes. I love a peek into the creative process.
