Changes afoot!
More traders revealed for October 18th, some annoucements, books worth reading, and one thing to eat in Cornwall.
Hello!
Iām writing to you from Cornwall and, my goodness, I really understand peopleās obsession with this county. The light in St Ives is as magical as they say, and the food has been sensational. Visiting the sauna and swimming in the geothermal seawater at Jubilee Pool made me tempted to look up longer term rentals in Penzance.
Iāve another day before the long drive back to London. Iām planning to do as little as possible today as weāve had lots of adventures. If you have any recommendations for places to stop to break the journey home, please do let me know. Native Grains is our first planned stop!
I canāt wait to tell you more about my highlights and share my map with paid subscribers in the near future. Until then, if youāre planning a visit, everything weāve been to that was featured in Weekend Journals Cornwall 4th Edition has been outstanding.
London Maps have been updated
There are a few new bakeries and ice cream places that have opened recently. As Iāve barely been in London I canāt say much about them, but I have added them to the London maps with the monthly update this week.
The Celebration on Saturday 18th October
Iām getting more and more excited!
I hope youāve marked your calendars! Lots of you reached out to tell me the waiting list link didnāt work. š¤¦š»āāļø I didnāt realise it would cap out so quickly so I set up a new one. If youāre interested in knowing about when the tickets open for the preview hour please fill in your details here.
Some more things to expectā¦
Iām excited to share that Kreuzberg Chocolates from Glasgow, who only use craft chocolate to maker their gorgeous filled chocolates, will be attending. I first tried these at the Brighton Chocolate Festival last year - on again on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September, the same days as the Aldeburgh Food Festival in Suffolk - can we manage both? I fear I will miss Aldeburgh - also celebrating 20 years! - again. Iāll be in Brighton on Saturday and leading a talk at 2pm.
Charlotte Flower also only uses craft chocolate to transform ingredients foraged near her Scottish home into the most interesting and delicious chocolates that sheāll be bringing with her on the sleeper train to arrive just in time for the celebrations at Big Penny Social on October 18th. Charlotte may also be running a short talk and tasting on the day.
J Cocoa - bean to bar makers and organisers of the Brighton festival - will be at my event on Saturday 18th October, hopefully bringing their moreish salted caramel bar that gets the salted caramel notes from using three different types of sugar, along with organic milk powder and a pinch of salt.
Petite Patisserie Farnham will be returning (they joined me at the last event in March) with more of their incredible patisserie. This time there will be tables to sit and savour them!
Lots more to be announced soon including an award-winning chocolate cake thatās not that easy to get hold of! I hope you can make it! Please tell a friend using the button below.

A little shake up
In a bid to make this writing both sustainable for me to continue and more useful for all of you, Iām making some changes.
Going forwards, Iām going to share āThis weekās Next Delicious Thingā - one thing! - every Sunday. It might not always be something brand new, and it may not be the most delicious thing Iāve eaten recently (though it probably will), but it will be something thatās caught my eye and I think youāll be intrigued to try.
Some things will be in London, some will be available by post, occasionally it might be something from somewhere else. It might also be a feature on an underrated/lesser known bakery (or these might go in the bonus posts, I havenāt decided yet).
Your answers are anonymous, but feel free to clarify in the comments or by reply email!
Then, once or twice a month, Iāll write a longer email more like the ones youāre used to - and this one! Iāve got so many things to share with you from all the things Iāve tried in the last two months in Edinburgh, Norway, Ireland and Cornwall. Plus Iāll be visiting food trade shows in the coming months. These emails will almost totally be for paid subscribers which I hope more of you might be interested to become. š
As well as the back catalogue of over 200 posts and a link to map of places I have my eye on visiting (this is a Google map link where I save the things I hear about and want to visit), and the upcoming maps and highlights mentioned above, Iām planning to host another in-person tasting from things Iāll buy at Salon du Chocolat in October, that will be for paid subs only, in November or early December.
Another pop up for your diary
Lungiās Treats Club pop up on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September. You might remember Treats Club that was a cult hit of freshly baked doughnuts with long queues? Lungi closed the store but is back with a pop up.

Books for your shelf
ās debut cookbook Silk Roads is published next month and itās already been short-listed for awards. I havenāt managed to hold it in my hands yet, but I love the sound of the cuisines explored and I know how much time Anna has put into researching it.Iām going to share part of the blurb here, but you should also know that it includes history and family stories, as well as 90 recipes:
āDiscover delectable dishes from Baku to Beijing ā Azeri-Iranian stews served with crispy-bottomed rice, dill-infused noodles from Western Uzbekistan, Georgian cornbread, Uyghur lamb chops and all kinds of dumplings, from fat, spiraled oromo to tiny, stuffed dushbara in a delicate saffron broth. Plus, youāll find refreshing drinks and sharbats, and American-inspired desserts like apple pie with quince, sticky persimmon pudding, and walnut-studded spiced blondies.ā

Iāve been listening to/reading Cloakeās Peach Street to Lobster Lane which Iāve mentioned before and itās as brilliant as I said it was likely to be. I am totally in awe of all of the planning and organisation and bravery to cycle across great sections of the USA.

Iām also finally listening to
ās Invisible Women (published March 2020). Caroline is writing her next book and I canāt wait for it already. I wish wish wish that Invisible Women and Matresence were assigned reading for every high school student because I feel like thereās no other way these important books would get in the hands of enough men to hope to turn the tide. Anyone reading know how we can influence that? Last I heard theyāre having enough trouble changing the curriculum from what it was in the 1990sā¦Link to Invisible Women on Bookshop.org and here on Amazon.

If youāre going to eat one thing in Cornwall
Make it the Chocolate Chip Cookie from St Eia.
I donāt even have a photo as they were given to me like contraband in a brown paper bag after we paid our lunch bill (lunch was incredible) and then we ate them in the street, torn off in chocolate-filled chunks.
But hereās a picture of the outside of the wine bar cum coffee shop cum restaurant:
Thatās it for now! See you in your inboxes Sunday with JUST ONE (DELICIOUS) THING!
Please remember to tell your friends and colleagues about Saturday 18th October.
And any thoughts or questions, pop them here:
lots of love,
Jen x
Youāre amazing! Thank you for highlighting SILK ROADS. And practically in the same breath as Felicity Cloakeās fantastic new tome; Iām honored!
Silk Roads is out in the UK on Oct. 9 and in the U.S. on Oct. 14
Ps: this also reminds me that I want to talk to you about something chocolate and book related š
