I’m in Week Six of a twelve week programme that’s called The Artist’s Way.

I first heard of it when I read

Elizabeth Gilbert
‘s Big Magic, about a decade ago, and then again when I heard the author of The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron being interviewed by
Emma Gannon
, about four years ago.

I still never picked up the book.

When I got back from Australia at the end of January this year I stumbled across

Ali Griffin Vingiano
here on Substack and saw she was about to start it with a cohort of other people.

I signed up.

I haven’t been reading ahead (I’m barely keeping up), so I was shocked to find that Week 4 was known as “Reading Deprivation Week”.

Timed just as I had a host of chores where I was looking forward to simultaneously listening to an audio book.

The idea is not just to avoid books, newspapers and Substacks 😱, but stories of all kinds and social media and tv and films.

I don’t watch much television of any kind, but I definitely read or listen to something for many, many hours of the day (if we’re counting emails, articles, podca…
