It always makes me sad to hear an operator-run bakery or restaurant is closing.
I know how much love goes into these places. And, of course, the time, energy and money. It squeezes at my heart to hear that they haven’t been able to make it work. Some, like Sans Pere (do you remember that coffee shop/patisserie that became a chain of three around Shoreditch before it closed?), come back bigger and brighter than ever, transmuted, as they did in the form of Buns from Home.
Others switch to online only - though watching those that have only ever been online deciding to shut up shop is just as sad. Some pivot to completely different careers, or take their skills to join another enterprise, or, like Meringue Girls or Tempt Chocolate, go out on a high because they’ve done all the things they set out to do and it’s time to take a break before a new adventure.
